Class Summary

The mission of the Gwinnett County Department of Transportation is to enhance quality of life by facilitating the mobility of people and goods safely and efficiently. This mission is accomplished by planning, constructing, operating, and maintaining the aviation, transit and surface transportation systems.
 
The Department of Transportation consists of three groups: Intermodal Operations, Capital Program Delivery and Traffic Engineering, Operations and Maintenance. The Department maintains an infrastructure system that includes more than 2,600 miles of road, over 730 signalized intersections, thousands of miles of traffic striping, the Gwinnett County Transit System and one of the three busiest airports in Georgia. The Department performs this mission with 164 approved full-time positions and a 2019 adopted operating budget of $51.3 million in multiple funds. 

The Traffic Engineering Division has vacant Trades Tech positions in the Traffic Signals group and the TCC/ATMS group. These positions are safety-sensitive and will require a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with Gwinnett County Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace.
 
This class is responsible for performing journeyman trades duties. The position will be required to perform work on highly specialized equipment associated with traffic signals, and depending on grade level, will act as a lead worker, directing personnel in the proper repair / replacement of equipment.  This employee must be able to trouble-shoot equipment to determine the cause of any problems and make accurate and timely decisions with respect to repairs and/or replacements. 
 
The grades and titles of these positions are dependent upon experience and education. The salaries shown below are the minimum for each grade. 
 
Minimum Qualifications:



Trades Tech I
Salary: $29,498 - $33,554

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.;
  • Valid Driver's License;
  • Valid Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) must be obtained within 6 months of employment;
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) must be obtained within 12 months of employment.  Once CDL obtained, this position will require DOT drug testing and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with Gwinnett County Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace.

The grade for this position is  A12(3).
 
Trades Tech II:
Salary: $34,817 - $40,040
  • High School Diploma or GED;
  • Valid Driver's License;
  • Valid Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) must be obtained within 6 months of employment;
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) must be obtained within 12 months of employment.  Once CDL obtained, this position will require DOT drug testing and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with Gwinnett County Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace.
  • Two (2) years of trades experience, or an Associate's Degree in Electronics and one (1) year trades/electronics experience;
  • IMSA Certification as a Traffic Signal Technician Level 1
  • Work Zone Safety Traffic certification

 The grade for this position is  B21(3).

Trades Tech III:
Salary: $41,258 - $47,447
  • High School Diploma or GED;
  • Valid Driver's License;
  • Valid Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) must be obtained within 6 months of employment;
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) must be obtained within 12 months of employment.  Once CDL obtained, this position will require DOT drug testing and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with Gwinnett County Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace.
  • Four (4) years of trades experience with one (1) year traffic signals experience, or an Associate's Degree in Electronics with two (2) years of trades experience with one (1) year traffic signals experience;
  • IMSA Certification as a Traffic Signal Technician Level 1 and Level 2
  • Work Zone Safety Traffic certification

The grade for this position is  B23(3).
