Job Description
REFER TO HOURLY JOB DESCRIPTION:
Plans welding technique and sequence of welding operations to weld assemblies so that enclosed or overlapping component parts are welded in proper order to allow maximum accessibility to areas to be welded and to reduce distortions and strains to a minimum. Uses gas, inert gas-arc, electric arc, or carbon arc welding methods according to information furnished or shop practice.

Performs such typical operations as fitting parts in jigs and holding fixtures as well as welding by gas, inert gas-arc, electric arc and carbon arc stress and structural assemblies such as motor mounts, landing gears, support bays, and assemblies or parts such as manifold and gas tanks where no leaks or cracks can occur, and assemblies to be machined to exacting tolerances where overall penetration must be uniform. Welds light gauge material; light gauge material to heavy stock; stiffeners inserted in assemblies where materials are readily destroyed by over-application of heat; close to edge where edge may be readily burned off; thick stock where material is easily damaged or imperfections in penetration of weld are not permissible.

Occasionally lays out, plans operation sequence and sets up for welding obsolete spares, experimental or developmental parts or assemblies when such information is not available. Performs rework wherein the operations are essentially the same as required for the work described above. Stamps work produced for purpose of identification to welder.

Must possess and use valid certificates as required by the company to perform work in these welding areas.

Welds and fits such parts and assemblies as flame dampers, landing gears, motor mounts, high pressure ducts, scoops, junction boxes, tanks, tubing, heat and ventilation systems. Performs seam, flange, edge, fillet, butt and lap welding on materials of medium gauge where metals are the same or nearly the same thickness at point of weld. Performs soft soldering and silver brazing as required. Fits and aligns parts by filing, trimming, straightening, drilling and grinding.

Performs such typical operations as making all types of cuts with single and multiple head profile cutting torch machines to close tolerances using automatic or manually operated tracer.

Operates equipment in assembly and fabrication areas to weld various diameters of tubes and fittings specified by production paperwork, blueprints, or other authorized documents. Locates weld area, checks cleanliness, cleans parts as necessary, fits up in jigs or in aircraft, checks tubes and fittings for proper rotation and degree, and makes weld. Cuts installed tubing as required to fit using standard tooling, deburrs and cleans. Examines welds for appearance. Refers to PJS's, QAD's, Setup Cards, MPS's, Process Specifications and similar documents for work sequences, cleaning and setup information. Reworks welds as instructed by rework documents.

Note: The American Welding Society document D17.1 “Specification for Fusion Welding for Aerospace Applications” is the industry standard that covers weld operator qualification and is the basis for certification at LM Aero.

NOTE:

Employees in the job classification are required to be proficient in multiple processes of welding.

Certification requirements are established in the job description and/or by agreement with the contractor and therefore may vary according to the needs of the company. Employees are given the appropriate certification tests by the Training Department and will be required to maintain that certification as provided by the applicable standards.

Employees must be able to read and interpret detail assembly blueprints.

Basic Qualifications
REFER TO HOURLY JOB DESCRIPTION: A candidate is required to take and satisfactorily complete an entrance Proficiency Demonstration (PD). Candidate is required to have three years of documented experience which includes electric arc, gas tungsten arc, and gas metal arc welding processes. Must be able to read and interpret detail assembly blueprints.

Desired skills
• Have certification from: The American Welding Society document D17.1 “Specification for Fusion Welding for Aerospace Applications” is the industry standard that covers weld operator qualification and is the basis for certification at LM Aero.

The following items summarize the required knowledge and skills to be demonstrated by a candidate for the job of aerospace weld operator using GTAW:

• Shall be experienced in all aspects of the GTAW process including, but not limited to, the basic theory of operation, process fundamentals, capabilities and limitations, welding machine setup, and operator level maintenance.

• Will be capable of making acceptable welds in all common welding positions including flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead.

• Will be capable of welding all joint configurations including butt joint, corner joint, edge joint, lap joint, and T-joint in both flat sheet and tube product forms.

• Will be capable of welding multiple material groups (steel, aluminum, titanium, corrosion resistant steel, and nickel based alloys) over a wide range of thicknesses.

• Will be able to interpret industry standard weld symbols and shall have a basic knowledge of weld size measurement, visual inspection, and weld defect types.

• Will have a basic knowledge of weld jigs and assembly tooling, be able to prepare basic joint designs, and perform any other necessary steps prior to welding.

• Shall have the corrected or non-corrected visual acuity necessary to pass the eye exam requirements necessary for subsequent certification
