  • Responsibilities

    Responsible for managing the flow of patients through the ED system. Navigates patients, family and staff focusing on the overall patient length of stay (LOS). Functions as the central point of contact for the area Assistant Nurse Manager, staff, ancillary staff, ED Physicians and the Private Physicians. Remains constantly aware of all activity within the ED. Manages all interior and exterior communications within the department. Utilizes the ambulance radios, patient call system, lab printer and the computerized patient tracking system to assist in coordinating patient care. Job requires detail-oriented mentality and ability to work independently. Uses own judgment and initiative to organize work and set priorities. Performs basic technical patient care duties for patients in accordance with University Hospital and State of Georgia practice guidelines for Emergency Medical Technicians.

    Demonstrates population-specific competencies (e.g. age-specific, cultural sensitivity, patient-centered communication) in performance of role.


    High School education required. Successful completion of an EMT Program required.

    EMT-B Level current certification as an EMT Basic in the state of Georgia required.

    EMT-I/A Level current certification as an EMT Intermediate or Advanced in the state of Georgia required. Must have the skills and abilities to start IVs and perform venipuncture as needed.

    EMT-P Level current certification as an EMT Paramedic in the state of Georgia required. Must have the skills and abilities to start IVs, perform venipunctures, interpret cardiac rhythms, and notify nurse and physician of any noted abnormalities.

    BLS certification required or attained during orientation.

    Crisis Prevention Intervention required or attained within 1 year of hire.

    One-year general working experience as an EMT preferred. Two years progressively responsible patient care experience recommended. Completion of hospital and unit orientation program.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    High level of interpersonal skills in order to effectively communicate with patients, families, visitors, team members, physicians, and other hospital personnel with who daily interactions must take place. Communication often requires high level of tact, sensitivity-awareness, and persuasiveness. Clear and concise verbal communication skills required for extensive telephone and personal interactions.

    Ability to apply technical education in an emergency clinical setting. Has a basic knowledge of growth and development relevant to the ages of the patients served in an emergency clinical setting. Basic knowledge of the diseases and health care needs of the patient population served.

    Basic level of analytical ability required in order to set priorities and coordinate patient care under the delegation of the emergency physician or registered nurse.

    Advanced level of interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively with multiple personalities and levels of personnel.

    Ability to perform efficiently and effectively under stress.

    Ability to think critically, organize work and prioritize multiple tasks and responsibilities. Job requires detail oriented mentality and ability to work independently. Lack of consistency in detail could result in increased patient length of stay, lower staff productivity, increase LWBS rate and lower patient satisfaction.

    Requires frequent intense concentration/attention to detail for reading and documentation, use equipment and computers, and to prioritize and provide patient care both direct and indirect.

    High level of professionalism required in appearance and speaking manner. Must recognize importance of privacy and maintain confidentiality at all times.

    Problem-solving skills sufficient to allow effective problem/conflict resolution.

    Demonstrated traits of initiative and dependability required.

    Philosophy of work and health care that is compatible with that of the mission of the institution. Work ethic compatible with that of the Emergency Department, University Hospital management and demands of the unit.

    Ability to interpret orders and performs orthopedic procedures independently.

    Ability to demonstrate knowledge of use of computer patient tracking systems, ambulance radios, patient call light systems and other office equipment.

    Must demonstrate excellent communication and organizational skills.

    Physical Demands
    Standing for long periods of time (8 to 12 hours)

    Walking for long periods of time (8 to 12 hours) to include moving about the work area, hospital and/or campus as needed

    Sitting for extended periods (8 to 12 hours)

    Must be able to bend, stoop and reach/lift above your head

    Sight: must be able to read documentation in a variety of formats such as items in print or electronically. For Health Care Providers (HCP) must be able to visualize patient condition and see data displayed on monitoring devices, etc.

    Auditory: must be able to hear in order to clearly communicate with others and use communication devices such as telephones, must be able to hear patients, alarms, call bells, etc.

    Tactile: must have ability to handle equipment and/or devices related to job duties, enter documentation within computer system. For HCP must be able to feel for pulses, skin temperature, and other patient conditions

    Olfactory: HCP need to be able to smell disease-specific smells

    HCP should not manually lift (including transfer, reposition, or move) patients who weigh greater than 35 pounds. The appropriate safe patient handling device will be used, except in emergency situations (life or death situations where delay in obtaining and using the safe patient handling equipment may be detrimental to the patient).
