  • Responsibilities

    Performs clerical duties for patients in all age groups (neonate, infant, children, adolescent, adult, and geriatric). The Unit Clerk is responsible for patient transfer and discharge, coordination of room assignment, initiation, management and coordination of patient medical record while on the unit. Performs reception, scheduling, order entry and other general clerical duties which support unit-based, multidisciplinary patient care teams.

    In addition to being accountable for public relations on nursing units, is
    accountable for visually monitoring, identifying, and documenting cardiac
    rhythms; promptly reporting dysrhythmia to nursing personnel as indicated;
    operating dysrhythmia alarm system; retrieving stored computer data; admitting
    and discharging patients on the monitoring system; and keeping inventory of
    telemetry transmitters. Embraces shared governance nursing organizational
    principals by being informed of nursing councils' activities so that outcome,
    goals and objectives of nursing are achieved. The provision of nursing care will
    be provided in an environment that embraces maximum participation by the staff.
    Embraces shared governance nursing organizational principals by keeping informed
    of shared governance activities and fulfilling job duties that assist the unit
    to achieve unit goals and objectives. Accountability will be monitored through
    direct observations, financial goal achievement, performance improvement
    activities, and patient outcomes.


    Ability to read, write, perform mathematical calculations, and follow written and verbal instructions. High School diploma/GED required.

    Related post-high school education preferred. (Examples: Unit Clerk, Medical Secretary, etc. or related course work.)

    Certified Unit Clerk is preferred.

    Successful completion of University Hospital's Monitor Technician Course, or successful completion of Competency Based Orientation for basic dysrhythmias.

    Cross-training must be completed within 1 year of employment. Employees who do not credential/recredential as required cannot continue to work as a Unit Clerk/MT.

    At least one year experience clerical/monitor tech position preferred.

    Experience dealing with public demonstrating excellent customer service skills required.

    Data entry/retrieval or other computer experience required. Experience with PC based applications strongly preferred.

    Completion of unit clerk program is preferred.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    Basic knowledge of growth and development relevant to the ages of the patients served in order to effectively relate to and communicate with public.

    Basic knowledge of the diseases and health care needs of the patient population served.

    Ability to think critically and prioritize multiple tasks and responsibilities.

    Basic typing skills (30 cwpm) preferred. Must be able to attain typing skill within orientation/cross-training period.

    Ability to perform efficiently and effectively under stress.

    High level of interpersonal skills in order to interact effectively as a team member on a team with varying levels of health care workers.

    High level of interpersonal skills in order to effectively communicate with patients, families, visitors, team members, physicians, and other hospital personnel with whom daily interactions must take place.

    Problem-solving skills sufficient to allow effective problem/conflict resolution.

    Demonstrated traits of initiative and dependability required.

    Physical Demands
    Sight - to read physician orders, other unit documentation, and monitors.

    Speech - to communicate with callers and other customers, and respond to intercom and monitor system

    Auditory - to hear patients, respond to call system and answer telephone

    Ability to enter into and retrieve data from a computer.

    Ability to sit for long periods at a computer terminal, monitor, or other workstation.
